The giant plastic continent swirling in the mid pacific is a fav topic of mine. Now evidence suggests, rather than just compelling penguins with fidgety feet to embark on exotic quests before they choke to death, it’s actually decomposing and leeeching chemicals into the oceans. Forget global warming, this one is really going to hurt…

It occured to me today that one way to save energy is by reducing Microwave usage. For example, I like to dine on Michelina’s and other microwavables at lunchtime - it’s a quick hot meal, cheap, and available when i want it. Normally you would put your tray in the freezer when you get to work (when you have a fridge available) and then pull it out at lunch time and cook it the prerequisite 5 minutes. Instead, if you leave it out when you arrive in the morning (it’s only a few hours) you can partially thaw your meal, thus reducing the amount of time in the microwave.
Now for some fun math…
According to this Power consumption table a typical 900 Watt microwave actually consumes about 1450 Watts of power.
So if we figure that you work about 20 days a month, and it takes 5 minutes to run the microwave for your lunch that’s about 2.5kw/hours. So if you shave off 1 minute by pre thawing, you save about .5 kw/hours. Now if all your co-workers do the same? Let’s say 300 people did the same.. that’s 150kw/hours saved! That’s enough to run that fridge all month… …though I guess you wouldn’t need it anymore if no one was using it in the first place. Does that mean you’re saving 300 kw/hours per month? ;) Maybe….
